PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dow Jones News Fund will support publication of “A NewsHound’s Guide to Student Journalism” with a grant of $3,500 to the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. The book will be published in early 2018 by CUNY Journalism Press, the academic publishing imprint of the School.

“A NewsHound’s Guide” is written by Katina Paron and illustrated by Javier Güelfi. Paron, an educator for more than 20 years, directs the NYC High School Journalism Collaborative at Baruch College and is the editor of Teen Voices. Güelfi is a graphic designer and illustrator with international experience including stints at Univision and BuzzFeed.

“The Fund sees this comic book style text as a great way to engage high school journalists in learning sound principles and thinking about the issues they will confront,” said Linda Shockley, managing director of the Fund.

“Javier and I are proud to have the support of such an important journalism organization,” said Paron. “It says a lot that the Dow Jones News Fund is making this investment in our innovative approach to engaging young people with these 21st century skills.”

The book’s appeal includes a diverse cast of characters set in an urban high school newsroom, hands-on activities and skill-building exercises. Teachers can use this fun guide for students with several skill levels.
